Uncertainty in Predictions of Hurricane Frequency and Intensity in Relation to the Greenhouse Effect

چکیده

In 1992 Hurricane Andrew came ashore just south of Miami, Florida. In its wake it left just over sixteen billion dollars in insured damage. In the same year, the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a report declaring that “global warming is inevitable.”1 These two ominous events have fueled concern that global warming may lead to devastating hurricanes. However, some have argued that much of this concern is “demonstrably unfounded [and] being embellished by politics.”2 What is needed is to fill the gap between existing scientific knowledge and public policy, for it is the responsibility of public policy makers to be concerned with questions in which science cannot come to definitive conclusions. Central to this effort is an understanding of the uncertainty involved in scientific conclusions concerning hurricanes. This paper will review the current literature regarding the predictions of hurricane intensity and frequency in a greenhouse situation and discuss the uncertainty arising from conclusions found in the literature.3

Analysis of heat waves temporal fluctuation in North - West region of Iran and their relationship with greenhouse gases and global land-ocean temperature anomalies

The heat waves today are one of the most important climatic hazards in the world. According to many scientists, the Severe and frequent occurrence of heat waves in recent years has been due to the emission of greenhouse gases and consequent increased global warming. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in the frequency and intensity of heat waves As well as their relationship wit...

CHAPTER 3. Causes of Observed Changes in Extremes and Projections of Future Changes. Weather and Climate Extremes in a Changing Climate. Regions of Focus: North America, Hawaii, Caribbean, and U.S. Pacific Islands

Changes in some weather and climate extremes are attributable to human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases. Human-induced warming has likely caused much of the average temperature increase in North America • over the past 50 years. This affects changes in temperature extremes. Heavy precipitation events averaged over North America have increased over the past 50 years, • consistent with the o...

اثر شدت چرا بر تراکم و تنوع بانک بذر خاک(مطالعه موردی: منطقه قوشه در استان سمنان)

At this research, the effect of the grazing intensity on the features of the soil seed bank in shrub lands in arid zones in Semnan province was studied. The sampling area (500 hectares) was determined including no-grazing area (un-grazed 15 years), the moderate grazing intensity and the high grazing intensity area near the close of interval each other. In each treatment of soil sampling, system...
